Gravel Calculator – How much gravel do you need?

Calculating the right amount of gravel for your project can save you time, money, and unnecessary trips to the supply store. Whether you’re working on a driveway, garden path, or landscaping project, understanding how to measure gravel correctly is crucial.

The Basic Calculation Method

To determine how much gravel you need, follow these simple steps:

1. Measure Your Area

  • Measure the length and width of the area you want to cover
  • Ensure all measurements are in feet
  • For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles and calculate each section separately.

2. Determine the Depth

  • Typical gravel depths range from 1 to 4 inches
  • For driveways, aim for a minimum of 4 inches of gravel
  • Convert depth to feet by dividing inches by 12 (e.g., 2 inches = 0.167 feet)

3. Calculate Volume

The fundamental formula is: Volume = Length × Width × Depth

Use Our Gravel Calculator

Example Calculation:

  • Area: 10 feet long, 3 feet wide
  • Depth: 1.5 inches (0.125 feet)
  • Calculation: 10 × 3 × 0.125 = 3.75 cubic feet

Converting to Cubic Yards

  • Since gravel is often sold in cubic yards:
  • Divide your cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards
  • In our example: 3.75 ÷ 27 = 0.1388 cubic yards

Weight Conversion

To convert cubic yards to tons:

  • Multiply cubic yards by 1.4 to 1.7 (depending on gravel density)
  • Typical density ranges from 1.4 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard

Pro Tips

Add Extra Material: Consider buying 5-6% more gravel than calculated to account for uneven surfaces or measurement errors.

Depth Matters: Smaller gravel requires less depth for even coverage.

Project-Specific Considerations: Driveways might need a base layer of road base underneath decorative gravel.

Gravel size affects coverage:

  • 1/4 to 1/2 inch gravel: 100 square feet per ton
  • 1/2 to 1 inch gravel: 90 square feet per ton
  • 1 1/2 to 2 inches gravel: 80 square feet per ton

By following these steps, you’ll accurately calculate the amount of gravel needed for your project, ensuring a professional and cost-effective result.
